What one AI reel really costs in 2026

Real API cost per AI reel in production: motion design $0.16 to $0.29, UGC talking reels $0.62 to $1.15, generated-image reels $0.86 to $1.18, and why.

Ask what an AI video costs and you get a subscription price: $29 a month, $99 a month, some number of "credits". None of that is the cost of a reel. Underneath every tool there is a per-reel bill made of tokens, characters, generation credits and compute seconds, and it varies by about fifteen times depending on how the reel is made.

So what does one reel actually cost once the marketing is stripped away, which line dominates in each style, and why does the cheapest style also score best with the people rating it? These are Ultim's own numbers from October 2026, as recorded in the cost ledger per reel.

The four styles, side by side

StyleHow the scenes are madeCost per reelBiggest line
Kinetic (motion design)Brand facts, photos and screenshots as an animated HTML page$0.155 to $0.291Script tokens
UGC (talking person)One generated still, animated into speaking clips$0.62 to $1.15Video clips
Generated-image reels (previous default)AI images per beat, voice over$0.86 to $1.18Images
Generated-video reels (Motion)AI video clips per beatabout $2.30Video clips

The Kinetic figures are five production reels made on 13 October 2026, $1.009 in total. The UGC figures are the production estimate per reel after two pilots and one demo. The last two rows are what the admin cost page showed for the older styles on the day Kinetic replaced them.

What goes into a Kinetic reel

ReelLengthScriptVoiceRenderTotal
NextDeskLamp16.6 s$0.114$0.052$0.003$0.169
ViewInRoom22.5 s$0.100$0.054$0.003$0.157
NEXT.REAL18.1 s$0.103$0.050$0.003$0.155
NextCars31.3 s$0.202$0.086$0.003$0.291
EveryJobShop24.4 s$0.178$0.055$0.004$0.236

Three lines, and the proportions surprise most people.

The script is the biggest line, $0.100 to $0.202. It is language model tokens: the brief in, a structured script out, and up to three QA retries when the deterministic checks reject it. A reel that passes on the first try costs about half of one that needs three attempts. Model price matters here: GPT-6 Astra via OpenRouter is $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens (read 11 October 2026), Claude Sonnet 5.5 is $2 and $10.

The voice is $0.050 to $0.086: ElevenLabs at $0.00022 per character, so it scales with the script length. The 31 second reel cost the most to voice because it had the most words.

The render is $0.003 to $0.004. The reel is an HTML page rendered frame by frame in headless Chrome on an always-on c7a.large at $0.1035 per hour; a reel takes 82 to 122 seconds. There is no image or video generation line at all, which is the whole reason the total is under thirty cents. The method is in how Claude makes motion design.

What goes into a UGC reel

Here the generation line returns, because a person has to be made and then made to talk.

  • Start frame: Nano Banana Pro, 9:16, 2K, 18 credits at $0.005 each: $0.09.
  • Talking clip, 5 seconds with audio: Seedance 1.5 Pro, 35 credits: $0.175.
  • Silent b-roll clip, 5 seconds: 17.5 credits: $0.0875.
  • Word timestamps for the captions: about $0.002.

A short reel (hook plus two lines) is one frame and three clips: $0.62. A standard reel (hook plus three lines, about 21 seconds) is $0.79. A boost reel with two b-roll clips adds two frames and two clips: $1.15.

The pilots landed on those numbers. Two 20.6 second reels took ten clip generations including two retakes, $1.75 together. A boost demo with four frames (one rejected), three talking clips and two b-roll clips came to $1.06. Retakes are the variable: every rule in how AI UGC reels work exists to keep them near zero, and the pilots ran at 1.25 generations per clip used.

The model choice is the other lever. The six-model test put Grok Imagine 1.5 at $0.11 per clip and Veo 3.1 Fast at $0.30 for 8 seconds; Seedance 1.5 Pro at $0.175 was picked for correct words and props that keep their shape, not for price.

Why the older styles cost more

The generated-image style made a picture for every beat, at $0.09 per image plus retakes for pictures with text or the wrong product, and the admin cost page put it at $0.86 to $1.18 per reel. The generated-video style replaced pictures with clips and reached about $2.30.

Both were retired on 13 October 2026, and not for the money. The owner's ratings of the AI-image reels described an AI look, a mixed story and text over the product; the Kinetic examples built from real site material were rated 5 out of 5. The cheapest style won on quality, because a business's own photos and numbers look like the business.

What drives the bill, in one list

  1. Whether anything is generated. No generation: under $0.30. A generated person: $0.62 to $1.15. Generated scenes per beat: $0.86 to $2.30.
  2. The writing model and the retry count. A frontier model at $50 per million output tokens is a dime or two per script; three QA retries triples it.
  3. Script length, through the voice. $0.00022 per character.
  4. Compute for the render. Pennies, on a machine that costs a dime an hour.
  5. Regenerations. Each bad frame or clip is $0.09 to $0.30. Rules in the prompt are cheaper than retakes.

What is missing from the list is a human. The ledger above has no editor, no voice artist, no designer. That is the real comparison: not $0.16 against $1.18, but $0.16 against whatever an hour of a person costs where you are.

What this means for your reels

Divide any subscription by the reels you will actually publish and compare the result with these numbers; the gap is the margin and the software. Then weigh the per-reel cost against the volume the data asks for. Based on our analysis of 4.5 billion TikTok posts, an account with 100 or more posts has a 39% chance of at least one top 1% hit; one that stops at four has 1.6%. A hundred motion design reels is $16 to $29 in API cost. A hundred UGC reels is $62 to $115. A hundred human-edited reels is a different conversation.

The number to watch is not the cost per reel but the cost per test, because each reel is one experiment and the next one is planned from its 24 and 48 hour read. At these prices a business can afford to be wrong fifty times, which is the only way the data says anyone gets to be right. For how the first reels on a new account behave, see how many posts before a video goes viral.

Ultim's plans start at $49 a month, with writing, voice, editing, publishing, measurement and the learning loop included. The free first step costs nothing: paste your website into /tools/reel-hooks and judge the five hooks before any reel is rendered.

FAQ

How much does one AI reel cost in API spend?

From Ultim's production ledger in October 2026: a motion design reel $0.155 to $0.291, a UGC talking reel $0.62 to $1.15, a reel from generated images $0.86 to $1.18, and a reel from generated video clips about $2.30.

What is the most expensive part of an AI reel?

It depends on the style. In motion design it is the script (language model tokens, $0.10 to $0.20). In UGC it is the talking clips ($0.175 per 5 seconds). Voice is $0.05 to $0.09 in both, and rendering is under a cent.

Why is the motion design style so much cheaper?

It generates no images or video. The scenes are the brand's own photos, screenshots and numbers animated as an HTML page and rendered by a headless browser, which takes about 100 seconds on a $0.10 per hour machine.
